Empirical Evaluation of Freeway Corridor Performance Before and After System-Wide Adaptive Ramp Metering System Implementation

چکیده
A System-Wide Adaptive Ramp Metering (SWARM) system has been implemented in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area, replacing the previous pre-timed ramp-metering system that had been in operation since 1981. SWARM has been deployed on six major corridors and operates during the morning and afternoon peak hours. This paper reports on the results of a “before” and “after” evaluation of the performance of two freeway corridors as part of ongoing efforts to measure the benefits of the new SWARM system as compared to the pretimed system. The study benefitted from using the existing regional data, surveillance and communications infrastructure in addition to a regional data archive system. The evaluation revealed that the operation of the SWARM system, as currently configured in the Portland metropolitan region, produced mixed results when comparing the selected performance metrics to pre-timed operation. The development of the capability to log actual ramp metering parameters as part of an ongoing ramp metering performance reporting system is recommended. Monsere, Eshel and Bertini 3

The corridor simulation environment with the capability of modeling various types of traffic control strategies as the external control modules is of critical importance in developing and improving corridor management strategies. In this research, a microscopic network simulation model, Vissim, is used to develop such an environment, where the new stratified Mn/DOT metering algorithm was simula...
متن کاملComparing Methods of Ramp Metering for On-Ramps to Improve the Operational Conditions at Peak Hours
This paper aims to evaluate and compare the effects of different methods of ramp metering on the operational conditions of traffic flow at three levels: the network level (including the freeway and its connected ramps), the entrance ramp, and the upstream segment of the entrance. To achieve this aim, one of the most important urban freeways in the metropolis of Isfahan was selected. The traffic...
متن کاملDevelopment of A Simulation Laboratory for Evaluating Ramp Metering Algorithms
As an efficient traffic control strategy to ameliorate freeway traffic congestion, ramp metering has been successfully applied in the US. However, the applicability and effectiveness of a ramp-metering strategy are required to be investigated during the preimplementation phase in order to ensure the success of the implementation. The use of traffic simulation models can provide a quick and cost...
